Has Ortiz developed his footwork and lateral movements?

The scheduled date of undefeated American Floyd Mayweather versus current WBC Welterweight Champion Victor Ortiz is fast approaching. Eight days from now, the sun on September 17 will come out from the horizon and we hope that both talented fighters will wake up confident and strong for their fight in the evening on that day at 9pm Eastern Time (6pm Pacific Time).

Based on the Mayweather vs Ortiz tale of the tape, there are really no significant advantage one boxer has over the other. The only thing that separates Floyd Mayweather Jr from Victor Ortiz is his experience inside the ring; his age is 10 years older than the 24-year-old young champion.

According to many boxing fans, "Vicious" Victor Ortiz needs to improve on his hunting ability, which includes his footwork and lateral movements. He needs to get better in his short and compact punches, so he can exchange punches with the slick Floyd Mayweather. If the compact punches land on Floyd's body it will surely have a devastating effect even if parried or blocked. In Ortiz's previous fights, many have seen that he still throws wild swings. These types of punches, even though they can hurt, can be easily read by the intelligent ring veteran. It can be easily evaded and countered by Floyd.

In his 41 fights, only De la Hoya and Castillo came close to winning against Mayweather. Their game plan was to bring Floyd to the ropes, then throw good a combination of hooks, straights and uppercuts by fighting in short distance.

Ortiz's style against Andre Berto last May was cunning. He came out strong and scored an early round knockdown which led to his unanimous victory. But Floyd is not Berto, Floyd is a much better fighter compared to all of Victor's previous opponents.

The solid fans of Ortiz believe that part of the game plan is to move sideward and hit Mayweather with a few jabs and if Victor sees an opening in Mayweather's defense it will be his go signal to release his 4 or more punch combinations which can possibly hit the liver area or the chin of Floyd, scoring a knockdown or hurting him with excruciating pain.

The footwork of Victor is still in question until today. Recently his bread and butter of winning the fight is his in-out movement and bringing the opponent to the ropes. This style may work against the 34-year-old veteran who has already won 6 championship belts, but a wide variety of attacks can give Ortiz more chances of winning.

Mayweather vs Ortiz is on September 17 and boxing devotees from all over the world want to see a fight of the ages. Floyd believes the fight won't go the distance because he and Victor are both aiming for a stoppage.
