Why Ortiz, not Cotto, Margarito or Pacquiao for Mayweather?

We all know that Floyd Mayweather Jr won against prime boxers in recent years, except probably on his last fight against old Shane Mosley, who is already at the twilight of his career. Years ago, Mayweather fought against highly-skilled popular boxers including previously undefeated Ricky Hatton from England, Mexican-American Oscar de la Hoya, and Mexican Juan Manuel Marquez among many others. In all of his 41 fights, Mayweather was victorious and no doubt he will be a future hall of famer because of this huge success.

The question that still lingers on my mind right now - and many other boxing fans out there - is that why Victor Ortiz? The simple answer to this question is that Mayweather chose Ortiz because he saw the latter's performance last April 16, against the then undefeated Andre Berto and got the WBC Welterweight Belt. And since Floyd wants to get that belt, he challenged Victor to fight him at the MGM Grand Arena less than a couple of weeks from now in the fight dubbed as Star Power: Ortiz vs Mayweather to be televised on HBO pay-per-view.

Many of the boxing fans who really want to test Mayweather's abilities inside the ring badly wants the undefeated pugilist to choose a hard-puncher such as Antonio Margarito, Miguel Cotto or Manny Pacquiao - but Floyd chose Ortiz instead.

On September 17, the only way for Victor Ortiz to win against Floyd is to harass him from the start of the first bell and try everything to end the fight in a knockdown. A stoppage is the only way Ortiz can win against Mayweather because the latter is just too elusive and intelligent inside the ring. His experience will be a huge factor.

Miguel Cotto and Antonio Margarito have been very open with their intentions of fighting Floyd Jr anytime. They are boxers who are very dangerous at the Welterweight and Super Welterweight divisions. These are guys who want to fight even though they only get a small percentage of the entire amount the whole event will make. These are boxers who love the sport of boxing and want to entertain fans all over the world with warrior-like attitudes in the ring. But where is Floyd Mayweather? Why is he eluding them? Is he afraid these pugilists will be the ones to end his winning streak?

Floyd Mayweather Jr may be one of the greatest in the sport. He may be better than current pound-for-pound king Manny Pacquiao. The recent problem with this boxer is that he hand-pick his opponents. Of course we all know that he did not pick those who are weak and light-punchers. Instead, he picked those opponents whose styles of fighting best fits his style so he can win easily.

Countless videos in YouTube can be seen that Floyd Mayweather Jr is afraid of Manny Pacquiao. Even as simple as saying the name of Pacquiao is too hard for him. The fight negotiations was almost finalized in late 2009 after Pacquiao won via TKO against Miguel Cotto but Mayweather ridiculously asked for an Olympic-style Drug Testing. That time, Manny Pacquiao was too afraid of the testing because blood will be extracted from his body for a certain number of days before the fight. Probably Mayweather got so happy because Manny made the fight collapse. It's like telling the world that Pacquiao was afraid to fight him.

Manny Pacquiao decided to fight Joshua Clottey while Floyd Mayweather decided to fight Shane Mosley; both Manny and Floyd won their fights.

After their fights, Manny Pacquiao was convinced that nothing seriously bad will happen to him if he agrees with Floyd's terms on the number of days the blood will be extracted. Because of this, Mayweather never fought again - until his upcoming fight against Victor Ortiz; Manny Pacquiao fought and won twice against Antonio Margarito in November 2010 and Shane Mosley in May 2011 while Floyd made the boxing fans wait for so long.

Is Mayweather afraid of Pacquiao, Cotto or Margarito? These are the type of boxers who never backs from an exchange just to throw their own barrage of punches to their opponents. These are the pugilists who want to leave the exclamation point in any brawl. Mayweather may not be afraid to fight these guys but what he is showing to the boxing world is the contrary.

In his comeback fight, Mayweather chose a 'young lion' that may be very hungry for a win but not as experienced as the boxers above. One additional reason why he chose Victor Ortiz is because he is a southpaw like Manny Pacquiao and he want to test his shoulder roll defense against this hard-hitter young champion.

Victor Ortiz will surely bring home a hefty amount after the Mayweather vs Ortiz fight. The odds of winning against Mayweather may be low but the possibility of pulling an upset is still there. If Mayweather wins this fight, we hope he'll hand-pick Cotto, Margarito or Pacquiao for his next fight.

Pacquiao vs Marquez is on November 12 and we hope the winner will fight Floyd Mayweather next.
