The first televised fight was the Vargas vs Lopez fight. Vargas managed to win against Lopez by SD (split decision) in a very entertaining fight. The official cards were 95-94 Lopez, 96-93 Vargas and 95-94 for Vargas but many thought Lopez won the fight.
After a slow start, Mexican-legend Erik Morales came back to life in the middle rounds. He now won his fourth weight division title as he pound down undefeated 21-year-old Pablo Cesar Cano in a bloody fight. Because Cano can no longer continue to handle Morales' barrage of punches, referee Kenny Bayless decided to stop the fight in the 10th round.
In the third televised PPV fight, Saul Alvarez started out early and knocked Alfonso Gomez down in the first round. The following rounds were a slugfest and fans were very entertained with the performance of the two pugilists. In the sixth round, Alvarez hit Gomez with a solid punch that led to more solid combinations. Because Gomez seems to be out of control and cannot defend himself, referee Wayne Hedgpeth decided to stop the fight.
In the main-event, Mayweather vs Ortiz, both Floyd Mayweather and Victor Ortiz came out strong. Ortiz was the aggressor while Mayweather was the counter-puncher. In the fourth round, Victor hit Floyd with a solid punch and brought him to the ropes. He was so excited and jumped at Mayweather's chin using his head. Referee Joe Cortez penalized 1 point to Victor in round four for the headbutt. Victor decided to ask for apology at Mayweather and kissed him but the latter punched him in the chin while Referee Cortez was not watching. Ortiz was knocked out in the fourth round, after Cortez finished his ten counts.
My reaction: The fight seemed to be a "staged" fight and I believed many out there agree with me. Because Ortiz will bring home a huge pay after the fight, Mayweather may have convinced him to do that thing and end the fight fast. Referee Cortez did not even say "fight" or "go" yet, he was still looking at the judges. If it was a "drama fight", the acting of Mayweather and Ortiz were very bad.
The Mayweather vs Ortiz result, in my own opinion, is bad for boxing. It's too good to be true, but I think it's a pure scandal to the sport. All the other fights were sensational!
Even Larry Merchant was not satisfied with the results. That was a controversial fight because Ortiz was not protecting himself yet and there was no go signal from the third man in the ring.

Mayweather has proven to me that he couldn't even beat someone who he thinks is not in his level. Watch the video again, after he tells Ortiz "Don't be doing that, Don't be doing that!" he says "Let's go" and signals the start of the fight, and also, just before the two hits, it seems like Ortiz told Money something, and Money reacted to the comment.

ReplyDeleteThe rule is when a ref calls time out, the clock stops and both fighters stop boxing until he gives the ok to box, there was no acknowledgement for both boxers to start boxing. That's why Ortiz was still looking at Joe. Mayweather should of been disqualified for not listening to the ref

ReplyDeleteOrtiz brought that on loss himself. His dirty action gave Mayweather; who was already ahead on points and out punching him 3-1, the perfect opening to knock him out. Joe Cortes did actually audibly say "Lets go" and he gave the two fighters the signal to continue. Run the video back if you don't believe me.
ReplyDeleteOrtiz had already apologized twice to Mayweather. 1st by a hug and kiss on the cheek and 2nd by touching gloves during the deduction. Once they were told "Let's go" Floyd took LEGAL advantage of Ortiz's lack of equal in ring experience. KO, good night, shows over! Money Mayweather 42-0.
As far as his outburst with Larry Merchant, if Larry had said the same thing to Floyd's face that he said immediately after the KO none of Floyd's ranting would have taken place. Larry's initial response was "An outstanding performance by Mayweather, He knew the flaws of Ortiz he seized on them. He took some of Ortiz's good shots. For once we can all say he was as exciting in the ring as he was outside of the ring." Why not just repeat that to Floyd first, then ask about the KO and then move on to interview Ortiz? Larry Merchant has a habit of talking side ways(disrespectfully)to boxers that he doesn't like. Then Ortiz lies about the head butt trying to gloss over it like it wasn't intentional. Larry didn't even bother questioning that BS. He just backed up Ortiz' story. Which brings me to my last point; Larry if you were 50 years younger and you chose to fight Floyd you'd be nothing more than win number 43 for the new WBC Welterweight Champion Floyd Money Mayweather Jr.
Diego Corrales, Arturo Gatti, Ricky Hatton in his prime, Zab Judah in his prime, Oscar De la Hoya, Shane Mosley... Who has Floyd ever ducked? There is controversy on both sides of the Pacquiao/Mayweather fight. Let's not let our bias toward one guy or the other cloud our vision on that point. Both sides have said or done some suspicious things involving that mega fight. I want to see that fight too. But I know that when it happens, if Floyd wins there will be more "boo hooing" from his detractors as usual. ReplyDeletePThe fans on this page are some of then most rasict tea-baggers that I have ever witness. I think we saw two different fights. I saw a fight were Mayweather walked down a bigger, younger fighter who was warned once about his use of the head and in his frustration tried to foul Mayweather by trying to ram his head into Mayweather chin. If you look, the fight was stopped. Ortiz came to Mayweather right after the foul and said sorry. Then the referree fined him a point. Then Mayweather is ready to fight with hands up and Ortiz is still asking for forgiveness for the obvious foul which the crowd booed him for. The referree was lost and had no situational awareness of where the fighter were and the technical procedures that were suppose to happen. Did not have Mayweather go to a neatural corner, did not control the fighters, did not verbally restart the action. Did not observe the start of the action. Started the count four second after Ortiz was on the ground. Not a good moment for boxing but it was lack of class for four people at the end of the day. Ortiz for trying to foul and injury Mayweather with dirty tactics. Mayweather for using street wits in the ring to take advantage of a opening to take out Ortiz early, the referree for losing situational awareness of the fight. Also Larry merchant has lost his professional ability to be a subjective announcer. He is getting paid to report what he sees but since he hates Mayweather and what he represents it hurts him to say anything good about Mayweather. Larry Merchant either get more professional or retire or HBO ends to fire you! Mayweather you need to fight Pacman and not retire for another 18 months. Victor Ortiz need to fight Amir Khan then if you win then maybe a rematch with Mayweather or fight with Pacman.

ReplyDeleteMost of you didn't care for Floyd prior to the fight, so your bias is clearly evident.
ReplyDeleteWhen a referee steps between fighters and sends you to opposite corners, the signal to resume fighting is the hand signal to break the air. Cortez clearly gave that signal, thus Floyd walked up to Ortiz in a protected stance. Cortez was actually gesturing to the clock, which if you watch boxing often, happens after the break of the air to resume fighting after a foul. Floyd, had his hands up, he was about to hit Victor in the initial hug, but Victor kept trying to hug, when Victor and Floyd both took a half step back, it surprised Floyd that Victory was still standing there with his hands down.
Now about Ortiz, if you notice from the first round, Victor made a focused attempt to foul. He attempted that Headbutt on about 4 separate occasions, only the last was truly successful. In the initial attempts, Floyd didn't complain at all, never gestured to the ref or blinked. Even after the successful headbutt, Ortiz followed it up with a Lft cross. In that same exchange he throw 2 elbows, its a big difference between using your elbow to catch punches or redirect punches and throwing it as a combo punch with a hook.
Ortiz doesn't want a rematch, his eye was almost closed and Floyd had opened up the arsenal in that rd.
Ortiz would have quit again.
For those of you sacrificing animals and praying that someone comes alone and beats PBF, it wont be Pac. I have heard many boxing experts say this and my limited knowledge of the sport tells me this. Any fighter who gets hit often like Pac will have a difficult time with an accurate offensive fighter or a gifted accurate counterpuncher, which PBF is both. To think that's not what he does best, his best trait is defense.
Pac will get hit a lot against Marquez, he will still win, but bouncing punches off your head is not a good message to send to the most gifted counter puncher in the history of boxing.
Pac will have a hard time with Mayweather like Ortiz.
i think promoters should look for a better dignified bout against the PACMAN, cuz i think we'll just see Gayweather circling around the ring or should i say that he might not even show up 4 the fight feeling scared cuz he knows that he's surely hit the canvas then wake the following DAY.

ReplyDeleteI've been watching boxing since the early 60's and the blame lies on the boxing federation for allowing Joe Cortez to continually ref major fights. He is consistently inadequate with clinches and this situation is nothing new. As in the Gatti fight Floyd did the right thing when there was an opening that the ref allowed. When the ref doesn't enforce a "Break-Fight" command scenario situations like this are bound to happen. There are a lot of things one could justifiably blame Floyd for, this shouldn't be one of them. Roy Jones made a career out of hitting guys off balance in ackward situations when the opponent wasn't expecting a punch. This is another of those situations.

ReplyDeleteThere was only one fighter who fouled. Last I checked, fair has never been a part of fighting. Ortiz was losing the fight regardless. I don't understand the point of these people posting it was somehow cheap. Floyd was dominating the score cards. It was an inevitable outcome either way. The ref could have done a better job. That announcer was clearly bias and it got to Floyd. Ortiz tried 3 times to headbutt him and the announcer clearly gave him a pass on his actions. Floyd had the right to be upset. The announcer knew the crowd was pro Ortiz and continued with his lead questioning not accepting anything Floyd had to say. It isn't Floyd's job to be a politician, he's a fighter. Regardless of how nice he is or isn't, he's the best at what he does, period.

If you watch the fight... the ref pulls Ortiz away... twice. Then.. brings ortiz to Mayweather. The apology was in 2 stages.... ONCE with the ref. After the ref brings them together.. they touch gloves... and the ref says "OK"... and walks away expecting the fight to resume.... BUT ortiz walks walks back again with his arms down to Mayweather and again apologizes. This extra apology was not needed. He should have put his gloves up. Mayweather is a fighter with a lot of experience. Ortiz to me.... looked like he KNEW he was going to lose... and WANTED to be knocked out in that way. This way there would always be a story about the loss. He was already losing badly. I agree... it was a quick shot.... bUT, in the ring... defend yourself at ALL TIMES. 1.Money Paid should be return for this non-sense fight.

3.Boxing Committee should review and make necessary things so that this kind of games never happen again to the World of Boxing.
4.All people involved should be punished or banned so other won't do the same again.
5.Give referee much better training.
I think it is clearly a knockout, mistake made by Ortiz and the referee, and taking a chance by Mayweather that's why it happened.

ReplyDeleteThere is no doubt in my mind after replaying the fight 5X that this was all staged! I've seen fighters take worst head buds than what Mayweather took! Its boxing, it can get dirty SO WHAT MOVE ON FLOYD! Yes it was dirty on Ortiz's behalf, He didn't have to stoop to that level,the man was not loosing he definitively took the 2nd round and still had a chance to win if the fight kept going! Whether time was called or not the principality of the situation,IF MAYWEATHER TRULY BELIEVED HE COULD "SON HIM" He wouldn't have felt the need to catch the dude clearly off guard. As for Ortiz, Its a freaking boxing fight not PROM!! Whats with all the kiss and make up BS!? Not to mention that Ortiz has taken harder hits that that "KO" combo from Mayweather. The entire main even was disappointing and obviously staged. Sad that B.S fights like these are the reason why Boxing is loosing fans.
