One of the things that make the forthcoming Mayweather vs Ortiz fight very exciting is that the Alvarez vs Gomez fight will be on the undercard. The mega-event titled as Star Power will be televised via HBO pay-per-view but there will be two locations for the fights.
Saul Alvarez, a native of Jalisco, Mexico, will defend his WBC (World Boxing Council) Light Middleweight Belt against fellow Mexican Alfonso Gomez on September 17 at the Staples Center in Los Angeles, California. They will be the main event inside the complex but this fight (Alvarez vs Gomez) will be part of the undercard which features the fight between Floyd Mayweather Jr and Victor Ortiz.
As predicted by many boxing analysts, Saul "Canelo" Alvarez won't have a hard time fighting Alfonso Gomez because he has all the advantages you can think of - experience, youth, power, speed and defense. Alfonso Gomez (23-4-2, 12 KO’s) is ranked number 6 in the world while Alvarez is ranked number 1. There's no reason for an undefeated fast-rising Mexican boxing star to lose against a much older and inexperience fighter.
Many believed this Alvarez vs Gomez fight is a mismatch and it should not be part of the Ortiz vs Mayweather mega-bout.
Alvarez (37-0-1, 27 KO’s), who recently fought and won against Ryan Rhodes and Matthew Hatton, is the bigger and stronger fighter. He will be facing a b-class fighter who has lost four times and doesn't have the enough speed to elude him.
Gomez has problems with body shots and Alvarez is very good at exploiting it. He doesn't stand a chance against the much better Saul even if he box his way until the fight goes the distance.
Morales vs Matthysse may be a much better match-up than Alvarez vs Gomez because of the entertaining factor of both Erik Morales and Lucas Matthyse. Eric and Lucas will fight on the same Mawyeather vs Ortiz location - the 16,800 capacity MGM Grand Garden Arena.
Golden boy will exert more effort to promote the fights which will happen in two locations - which will feature Floyd Mayweather Jr and Victor Ortiz. See the Mayweather vs Ortiz tale of the tape to check who has the advantage.
